Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first appearance was in television shows as Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she turned an adult because of the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school, but she decided to begin playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness brought her back to California again where she began performing on stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Perry was a regular character in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. She played an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The role was given an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
